personality:

Dan Humphrey on the surface is a very sarcastic, very dry humored, clever intellectual. He is cultured, preferring an obscure foreign film over a mainstream hit when it comes to film preferences, indie music when it comes to music. Despite this, he's not the most well-spoken. He rambles, preferring the occasional run-on sentence. His mother used to say there was never a word he'd met that he didn't use. Over the years, his rambling has subsided, as he's gotten more comfortable with himself and who he is.

But, on the same token, he's transformed. At the start of the series, he makes it very clear that he wants no part of the Upper East side life, it's not for him. But, over time, slowly but surely he sure does end up in that life whether it be through his father, Serena, Blair... You name it, he pops up there. And though his father marries Lily, he never moves out of the loft in Brooklyn. He doesn't speak about the money but it's clearly not an issue for him from season 3 and on. One thing that doesn't change is that Dan is always the individual, the outsider, or, at least, that's how he sees himself.

From day one, Dan has felt invisible. He had this huge crush on Serena Van Der Woodsen who spoke to him once but when he starts to date her, his life completely changes. Over time, Nate Archibald becomes his best friend, Serena a closer friend and multiple ex, Blair - ... well, the possibility of a girlfriend. He wrote a book from the outsider's perspective not realizing that he really has evolved. He's... arrived so to speak. He is in. If someone told him this, he'd fight it briefly before realizing they're right. Gossip Girl, hilariously enough, was right when she called him the ultimate insider at the end of season 2. But, what she doesn't get is that Dan doesn't end up embroiled in everyone's drama because he wants to up his station in life, it's always because he cares about any one of them. In fact, the drama with his book is really the first time his own drama affects anybody else's. He finally goes for what he wants, he finally takes a chance (thanks to Vanessa giving his book in), that he doesn't realize how everyone else will react.

A lot of the time, Dan is very selfless. He will give up opportunities, events, big breaks for his friends and family. He takes care of Milo, whom he thinks he fathered with Georgina without blinking an eye and he even bonds with him. (This also teaches him responsibility.) He steps aside for months when it comes to Blair, going so far as to write Louis' vows for him based on his own feelings for her. His first truly selfish moment arrives when he films her conversation with Chuck during the ceremony and leaks it to Gossip Girl - but even then, he does that for Blair's happiness.

As mature as he acts, he's still 20 years old. He has his naive moments. At times, Dan can be a bit gullible. He's believed lies spread on Gossip Girl though by now, he does know how her bombs can be off - or perfectly times. Despite that, like the others, he checks Gossip Girl several times a day and he subscribes to her posts like everyone else. Like a teenager, he has his moments when his problems are the most important ever... and to deal with them, he likes to talk them out - sometimes with Nate, or Rufus... strangers will do as well. Like I said, when it comes to Dan... he can definitely be talkative. Being young also factors into his isolation when he's down or something has gone wrong. He stays in, often not talking to people unless someone comes by. And at some points he can be closed off. But, it doesn't take a lot to nudge him into spilling what's going on.

Dan has been put down many a time for living in Brooklyn. But, that's a source of pride to him. He's been poor (so-to-speak, poor on Gossip Girl is surprisingly middle class) and he's become a better person because of it. He's not super materialistic and he doesn't need all the space ever when it comes to living spaces. It must be said, that like any middle class to upper class individual, he will miss hot water and reliable electricity dearly. He's a big writer and he uses his laptop to write, so that will be an adjustment.

Dan is a writer. He writes from what he knows. He writes offscreen often, pretty much once a day. He also works very hard. He has a good work ethic when he kicks himself in the ass to do so. He also has high principles and has been screwed over a few times, writing-wise. He wasn't always focused novel-wise. He'd gone after magazine internships, etc but recently, he focuses on novel writing. And he's good, too. He wrote a New York best seller. At one time, he was a cater waiter to help pay for college. So, when it comes to work, Dan isn't afraid to get his hands dirty if he needs to. He also went to college and... might still go though we haven't seen a trace of it all season.

Dan often does the right thing. When it comes to Blair and Louis, he steps aside, staying silent, hiding his feelings. Many times, he's the moral compass of the group. He hesitates when they want to break into the school. In season 1, he hates the scheming and lying. He does have issues with trust. Once you break it, it takes a lot to get it back. And if you screw him over, he's not going to forget.

He also has a wild streak, deep down. Because he has a reserved nature and he played the part of the good brother, he can let loose. He's indulged in a threesome before. He won't say no to pot (as long as he doesn't drive, need to be anywhere, nothing irresponsible will happen while smoking it). And like anyone, he gets a rush from doing something dangerous. Though, beforehand, he'll worry about the consequences, waffle on actually doing anything, and then finally do it -- unless it's something that needs to be done/someone deserves. He takes down Georgina without a second glance in season 1 with Blair's help. He tracks down Juliet's past in season 4. He has definitely schemed and he will fight back where he once took it lying down. He's not a huge schemer but he is not incapable. Blair definitely brings this side out of him.

Dan is fiercely loyal when it comes to family and friends. Sometimes, he can overlook the right thing because of selfishness or settling a score. This happens when he learns of the Vanessa/Chuck debacle in season 2. Instead of helping Blair, he gives her bad advice, ruining Chuck/Blair and pushing Serena into Aaron Rose's (with the greasiest hair ever) arms. He punches Chuck as he proposes to Blair at the end of season 3 when he learns Chuck slept with Jenny. He also comes to the rescue of every cast member at one time or another.

Dan and women... Dan has no problem being monogamous. But, when he's not in a relationship, he has no problem playing the field. This is shown in the beginning of season 2 where his libido has definitely been awakened. But, since that moment, he definitely shows a more conservative side when it comes to sex. He does fall for a slightly older teacher, Ms. Carr. Dan can get along with adults, thanks to his maturity and this is shown through that brief relationship. He also falls for Georgina, twice. Once when she dupes him in season 1 as Sara and the second at NYU because he thinks he sees something redeemable in her (spoiler alert: there's nothing redeemable about her.)

Blair for the moment, is his end all and be all. They scheme together. Their friendship has really developed and in a lot of ways they are equals. Right now, Dan loves Blair and has told her so, several times. He is sexually attracted to her and will do nearly anything for her and more importantly, for her happiness because that's the kind of guy he is. He has also recently grown quite the backbone for her, standing up to Chuck. He's given up his happiness several times for her. He went to an essay contest she won without telling her - way back in Season 1... He has it bad for her. He also brings a better side of her out. They bond over old movies and culture and art. He sees her -- less desirable qualities and accepts her anyway.

Serena... is complicated. A part of Dan might always love -- what they were to each other. But, there were too many complications and her life is just that. Which is funny, because you could say there is such a double standard with Blair but the difference is, he's not in love with Serena anymore. For the woman he loves, Dan deals with bullshit. It's simple as that. But, Dan still cares about her and they are still friends. But, he recognizes her bad qualities as well and unlike Blair, they turn him off. She can be very waffle-y when it comes to choosing... anything. She too can be naive, especially when it comes to her family. But, he takes her with the good and the bad. She's also his step-sister. Literally. There's a minor ick factor there.

Vanessa Abrams. She's his best friend from childhood. But, right now they are not on good terms. She screwed over Serena, him -- she lied -- a lot has gone down between these two including the most boring relationship. Seriously. She tried to spice it up by roleplaying a scene from Rear Window. To Dan, she's ambitious to the point of manipulation. And she endangered Serena's life which - is the main problem she has with her duplicity. She lies to him, keeps things from him -- if anyone is the ultimate insider, she is. He doesn't trust her. Her manipulations sunk their relationship and their friendship. But, there will always be that girl who climbed in his window.

Dan loves his father and respects his opinion though they do disagree thanks to the age difference. His father supports him and loves him for who he is. He is also very encouraging and Dan knows how lucky he is. He also cares about his father's happiness. His father has found love. This is fantastic.

Jenny, while wildly out of control, is still Dan's sister. This is another person in his life who he will defend to the ends of the Earth. He loves her. She's his family - as trainwreck-y as she is -- he doesn't... really see that part. He was really left out of her manipulations with Nate and Serena. All he sees is his exiled little sister who let the Upper East Side take her over. As far as he's concerned, he loves that she's out of the city. It's better for her in every way. He's come to her rescue several times. He's the one who reminds her of where they come from, their roots, so to speak.

abilities/powers:

Dan has no supernatural abilities or power. But, he does have the ability to take an abnormally long breath to ramble into. Other than that, he's pretty much without real abilities. Writing would fall under this category but really, that's just subjective. He can talk Blair down from the ledge. He's great at befriending people. Is that an ability? If so, file that under abilities. He also has the power of reason.

first person sample:

Yeah... I - I was going to say, thanks for dropping me in the middle of a Hitchcock film but I realized it was more like a scene out of one of the Saw films, earlier, really - probably the first and even if I was being accurate in terms of what type of crazy, horrific film I'd been dropped into, there's still the matter of - of not knowing who... uh, brought me here. Or, thought I was dead. Because, I'm not dead and now I'm talking into someone else's really state of the art phone.

Yeah. Help is -- implied, here. Along with help, the aptly phrased, 'Pinch me' so I can wake up because -- if anything, this seems like a ransom and of all people to kidnap for ransom... yeah, Dan Humphrey... which is my name for those of you who are listening... is not someone... you kidnap. For anything. Yeah, my dad has money but it's -- through Lily and, anyway, I'd be a terrible kidnap victim. I'd talk and talk and talk and they'd probably just drop me back off on the sidewalk they snatched me from -- o-or my loft. Because, that's the last place I remember being.

My locked loft. I remember I locked it because... [ and for the first time, he stops talking. Blair had come in. had she locked it? surely he had locked it after? ] Regardless, kidnappers go for Serena, or - or Chuck. Eric, even, who's [ he scratches the bridge of his nose ] apparently in Zimbabwe or Zaire or somewhere in Africa so I guess that'd... make it difficult... to.

Huh.

[ He finally stops, sucking in a breath. ]

So, my butt is cold. My everything is cold. The nearest source of clothing would be... ?
